Kathmandu, May 31: A team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today set out to investigate into the Soti incident that took place in Rukum Paschim on May 23. The incident ended up with the deaths of five persons and disappearance of one.
The team led by NHRC Deputy Director Chandra Kant Chapagain will visit Rukum Paschim and Jajarkot to study the incident resulted after the inter-caste marriage bid.
The team will monitor and study about the incident’s background, state of caste-based discrimination, the then cause of the incident, state of peace, security and social goodwill in the post-incident atmosphere, and investigations taking place by local administration and police.
Earlier, a district -level team formed in collaboration of NHRC, Nepal Bar Association, Federation of Nepali Journalists and NGO Federation Nepal carried out a preliminary monitoring of the incident.
The NHRC has urged people’s representatives, political parties, human rights activities, civil society and locals to lend all sorts of cooperation to ensure a fair investigation into the inhumane criminal offence linked with the worst form of caste-based discrimination and bring the guilty ones to book.RSS
